Fried Chicken + A Workout? You Bet!

Can you really have your cake and eat it too? Our friend Mai Lyn of Deep Fried Fit thinks you can. Mai Lyn is all about health and fitness but also enjoying life along the way. And if that means enjoying some delicious fried chicken, so be it. Now I’m pretty sure everyone can get behind that mentality. We sat down with Mai Lyn and got her to spill the beans on everything food and fitness. Check it out below!

What inspired you to start Deep Fried Fit?

I started Deep Fried Fit as a creative outlet that talked about my fitness journey and my appetite for all the delicious foods. I’m a huge foodie, but I also love playing sports and working out. It soon became a platform where people could relate to the struggle of wanting to work out but also inhale donuts.

What is one food (or meal) you could not live without?

Fried chicken and spaghetti. I could eat it when I’m sad, mad, happy, hungry or bored.

How do you stay motivated (to blog, meet fitness goals, etc.)?

Writing is something I love and sharing blogs that may inspire someone to try something new is what keeps me going. Workouts are therapy for me and how I manage my stress and anxiety. It’s also one of the best ways to treat my body. I want to be healthy at any age and the time I put in now is an investment in a healthy future.

How do you decide that a workout, tip or recipe makes your blog?

That’s the beauty about having a blog. I write about whatever inspires me at the moment. I try to create a calendar of blogs so I’m not just talking about one topic. I mix it up with fitness and food posts. You can find my reviews for new workouts, event round ups, foodie adventures around my city and more.

What’s the best piece of fitness or health advice you have?

Don’t be too hard on yourself. Fitness is more than just physical results or numbers on a scale. It’s also a mental and emotional growth too. My blog is about balance, not a rigid diet. Enjoy your pizza and then go get in a workout.

What’s your favorite season and why?

Summer. I love the heat and the sunshine. I love how the evenings feel when it cools down and there’s just so much more to do activity wise. I’ve always associated summers with youth, freedom and good vibes.

How does health and healthy living play a role in your life?

It’s a check-in with my body mentally and physically. I’m a bit of a workaholic and it’s how I break away to take time for myself. And of course, it keeps my metabolism going so I can enjoy carbs and beer.

What’s one simple thing you do every day to be just a little bit healthier?

I track my steps and my sleep. I have a goal to reach each day and I try my best to hit 10K. If I miss one day, I try to make sure I hit the next time. I also like to schedule out time to workout so I’m less likely to skip.

What’s your favorite inspirational or motivational quote?

We rise by lifting others. It’s an empowerment quote that I love and it reminds me that my mission is much larger than myself. I love helping people and the more good energy you put out, the better. It’s a waste of energy to be competitive or mean.

What’s your favorite music to work out to?

Trap music. LOL! I love listening to hip hop. It energizes me and gets me pumped for my workout. It’s like a party in my head!
